Psychological challenges of athletes

"Order, work, and discipline" and "blood, sweat, and tears" are sayings that best describe the challenging path of every professional athlete, as well as amateur athletes.

Alongside school or work commitments and daily stressors, challenges in sports can become overly demanding and affect final results or the lack thereof.

Some specific situations or thoughts that most often worry athletes are:

  • "I attend every training session, but I'm not making progress."

  • "Everything goes well in training, but I freeze up during competitions."

  • "I get really nervous during competitions and my legs go numb."

  • "I've lost several times already, feel like I'm not progressing, but don't know where or how to proceed next."

  • "I just can't coordinate my training with other commitments."

  • "I have trouble communicating with my coach or teammates."

Psychological preparation of athletes

In addition to physical, technical, and tactical preparation, athletes can greatly benefit from psychological preparation. The psychological preparation of athletes focuses on identifying difficulties that prevent athletes from improving and progressing, and sometimes a psychologist can be the person who actively listens to and guides the athlete.

Psychological preparation consists of the following steps:

Introductory discussion and agreement

Through testing, difficulties are uncovered so that we know what and how to work on next.

Psychoeducation

Psychoeducation aids in understanding why we behave the way we do.

Practical exercises

Psychological preparation of athletes encompasses work in the following areas:

  • setting goals

  • directing focus on performance

  • guiding and maintaining motivation in challenging situations

  • reducing tension

  • increasing relaxation of body and mind

  • greater sense of (self) control

  • less preoccupation with negative thoughts

  • adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits

  • visualization, breathing and relaxation exercises

Individual sessions are held in person or online, according to the schedule and needs of the athletes, and are aimed at athletes aged 16 and older.
